Artist Jon Lomberg painted this image for the cover of CONTACT, the novel by Carl Sagan. It shows the night side of Earth with the lights of the Americas visible, set against the backdrop of the Milky Way Galaxy.

Jon Lomberg later went on to design the space animation sequences for the hit movie, CONTACT.
