Portrait of the Milky Way is the most accurate view of our galaxy ever painted. Commissioned in 1991 by the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, it now appears in science centers worldwide and on NASA’s Kepler Mission website as the best depiction of our galactic neighborhood.

Galactic Wave ©
Jon Lomberg pays homage to the great Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) who created a famous woodcut of a giant wave with Mt. Fuji seen on the horizon. Lomberg reinterprets this image in an astronomical context, showing the disk of the galaxy as a cresting wave spraying out young stars. The galactic center can be seen in the background, in the position Mt. Fuji occupies in the woodcut.

In Hawaii we see ancient processes still at work creating new land on our planet. Similar volcanic activity has shaped our Moon, Mars and Venus, and is surely at work on billions of other planets in our Milky Way Galaxy. Lava terrain here can be used as a testing ground for spacecraft sent to explore these neighboring worlds.
